Zur Etablierung der musealen Berufung wurden ab dem Anfang der 1990-er Jahren Schritte mit großer Anstrengungen unternommen, darunter mit zeitgemäßer Annäherung, bei verschiedenen Führungsmethoden aber stets unter schweren Bedingungen. Zur Vollentfaltung der Berufung des Landesmuseums - Integrierung von zusätzlichen Dienstleistungen - wurden zwar Konzepte entwickelt, doch zur Erneuerung und zum Betreib der Organisation auf einem hohen Niveau fehlen noch die notwendigen finanziellen Quellen.

The museum is a unique intellectual organization One of its representatives in the county is the Nógrád Historical Museum in Salgótarján, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of foundation in 2009. Its existence and activities are not without antecedents: the collection base was laid down by Iván Nagy, historian in Balassagyarmat, and by Béla Dornyay, teacher and polyhistor in Salgótarján. The first predecessor of today’s museum, the Nógrád County Labour Movement Museum was established only in 1959 as a result of delayed town development, reflecting the ideological character of the period in its name and in functions as well. The organization passing through the stages of organic professional development found a newly built home in 1980 and again, due to political decision, got the name Sándor Nógrádi Museum. The traditional museum work carried out in more favourable conditions coupled with busy scientific activities at that time.

From the 1990s developing the mission of the museum named Nógrád Historical Museum with more modern approaches has partly been done, with changing management methods, in more and more difficult conditions for existence, at the cost of serious efforts and sacrifices up to these days.

For fulfilling the mission of a county museum particular concepts on probable integration of complementary services/functions are developing. However, the necessary resources for renewal and sustainable, high standard functioning are not yet abounding.
