ZOLTÁN BALOGH „WEDDING OF THE DEATH” - THE REMINISCENCE OF GLASSBLOWER FERENC GYURIS SR.ABOUT THE BATTLEFIELD OF GALICIA IN THE GREAT WAR The glassblower of Salgótarján, Snr. Ferenc Gyuris, who survived both the Galician frontline and Russian P.O.W Camps, finished his life story in 1963 at the age of 76. The story written mostly from memory, contains valuable description about his life at the glass factories in Málnapatak, Dresden and Salgótarján, then about the Galician frontline and his captivity. Snr. Ferenc Gyuris was born in Málnapatak (today: Málinec, Slovakia) on the 30th May, 1887. He came to the Bottle Factory of Salgótarján as a glassblower in 1905. He spent his military service at the 16th Infantry Regiment of Besztercebánya as a machine- gunner. In the First World War he fought at the battlefields of Galicia as a corporal of the machinegunners squad of the 3rd battalion of his 16th Infantry Regiment. He smelled powder for the first time in Operation San in October. He fought in the battle of Zagórzyce near to the city of Kraków and he struggled in the victorious battle of Limanova. He spent his Christmas Eve of 1914 in the trenches of Dobrotyn. He was captured on the first morning of 1915. The war chapter of his life story and his battlefield experiences were elaborated in this work. 101
