PEÁK ILDIKÓ Painter Lajos Gulácsy was born on 12 October 1882 in Budapest. His talent for painting became visible early. He made many study tours abroad, between 1902 and 1915 he spent most of his oeuvre in his much liked Italy except for a short trip for Paris. His works can't be classified to any tendencies of the Hungarian art of his age. His art is mostly related to the English Preraffaelism. In 1914 at the beginning of the World War I Gulácsy had an attack of schizophrenia which was incubating in him for a long time. From 1917 to his death (1 February 1932) he lived in mental hospital intermittently. This essay follow the characteristics of the outbreak and the development of the schizophrenia in the art of Lajos Gulácsy. 239
