WHEN THE CONFLICTS BECOME MORE INTENSE... The relationship between the border soldiers and the noblemen living in Fülek on the strength of two records of examination from the time of István Koháry's General-Captaincy (1667-1682) BY ZOLTÁN IGOR KOMJÁTI The two records of examination give basic information about getting acquainted with the causes why the border soldiers and the noblemen living in Fülek were on bad terms, and it complements the chronological presenting of their mutual disagreements worked up previously by the author. The first record of examination served as a basis for legal attacks of the noblemen realized in denouncing before the higher authorities in 1668-1669, and showed that the border soldiers of Fülek (independently of the fact that the raids and making forays were strictly forbidden by the Treaty of Vasvár in 1664) invaded and penetrate into the Occupied Territory ruled by the Turks and the counties lying near to Fülek by common assent of their superiors, and not only fought against the Ottomans, but also pillaged the inhabitants of the smaller towns and villages. The border soldiers were conscious of their crimes and attempts, but they knew, too, that the General-Captain and the Deputy- Captain would be clement to them if some gifts were offered from the booty. Besides, the evidences of the beholders revealed that the living-stock driven off by the border soldiers were never or only partly given back to the original owners; that Pál Bélteky really had some cattle slaughtered and sold to the butchers; that István Koháry really drafted the answers to the Turks on his own, disregarding the noblemen, the lower strata of the officers and the border soldiers. A large part of the beholders had knowledge of the fact that Pál Bélteky killed István Pető in 1660, and three years later, he left the defence of Szécsény Border Castle under pretext of a false reason. In the second record of examination, we can find answers to the backgrounds and the process of the attempted murder against Pál Bélteky in May, 1678. The assailant, Menyhért Ebeczky, was in a drunken state when the attempt happened, and it was a spontaneous act, but gave an excellent opportunity for the nobility to come into action anew against the military commanders. The 31 beholders’ confessions recorded in August, 1678, coincided with the fact that Menyhért Ebeczky was really under the influence of drink, when he picked a quarrel with Pál Bélteky in a cellar situated outside the city walls, so the servants led him out of there unless blows would be exchanged. Menyhért Ebeczky intentionally wanted to kill the Deputy-Captain. His crime consisted of two points of claim: firstly, he blasphemed and blackguarded him with the most hideous curses according to the contemporary strict morals, and on the other hand, he wanted to kill him at any costs, which can be turned out from those facts, that he cocked two flint-locked gun, and he even brought a „sharpen-dagger” with himself, and, despite his way was barred three times (when his wife begged him, at the gate of his house and when he reached the gate of the city), he did not want to cease from his murderous intent, which for there were no excuse that he was in drunken state. After his first 105
