Sacral Artworks by József Bátki in Salgótarján by Gabriella Shah

The artistic life in the decades after Salgótarján was raised to town rank was formed mainly by academically educated, foreign country visiting artist-teachers and talented amateurs. József Bátki (1877—1948) painter and sculptor, born in Zagyvaróna, worked in Salgótarján from the mid-1920s, Károly Bóna Kovács (1897—1970) and Frigyes Fayl (1889—1953) also settled down in Salgótarján and contributed to the arts and cultural life of the town.

József Bátki worked a lot for the Roman Catholic Church. His works are preserved in the churches of Salgótarján and the vicinity. Among them are the altar in the Main Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary, the murals of the Israelite Church and the frescoes of St Andrews’ Church in Zagyvaróna. The study gives detailed descriptions of these works.
