NEOGRAD 2010 • A NÓGRÁD MEGYaWy^WZEUM0K ÉVKÖNYVE XXXIV. The Crucifixion in the History of the Hungarian Visual and Applied Arts from the Foundation of the State to Present Day by Gabriella Shah The cross in its different forms is the richest and most permanent geometrical symbol in religion and culture which is present both in written and visual art pieces. In Christian Culture the cross is a representation of Jesus Christ’s redeeming suffering and of God’s perfect love . In the history of art there is no other relationship of such a complex and elaborate character as the relationship of religion and visual arts. In the course of history, in different cultures the relationship of art to religion has shown a varied picture. Each historical period and trend established its own concept of art, and at the same time each period had its own religious belief and relation to God. In my study I examine how Jesus Christ’s Crucifixion is represented in the history of Hungarian art from the foundation of the state to present day. 149
