Steneofiber depereti MAYER, 1908 find from Zagyvapálfalva A pièce of grey micaceous clay was given for the Municipal Museum of Pásztó by Mr. Miklós Jánossy a Salgótarján resident in 1999. On the surface of the 0.5 kg sample only the incisor was visible. After washing in sieve and préparation we had got an incomplette mandible with p4 -ml -m2 molars and 4 other cheek teeth (only 2 of them are suitable for study). The locality is an inactive quarry situated at the western side of the national road no. 21 (fig. 3.) at the Southern margin of Salgótarján (pronounced as Shalgo:tarya:n). This part of the town was earlier named as Zagyvapálfalva (pronounced as Zadyvapa:lfalva). The beaver mandible was found in the 2 nd layer of the section (fig. 2.). In 1999 20-20 kg test -samples were collected from the 2 nd and 3 rd layers of the quarry by the discoverer and by the author, but more fossils were not found. Systematic description ordo: Rodentia BOWDICH, 1821 familia: Castoridae GRAY, 1821 genus: Steneofiber GEOFFROY -SAINT -HILAIRE, 1833 Steneofiber depereti MAYET, 1908 material: 1 fragmentary mandible with p4 -ml -m2 molars, IM 1-2, 1M3 (figs. 3.,5.,6.,7.) On the mandible fragment we can take the following measurements (fig. 4.) HM: height of the mandible below the p4: 18.5 mm IP: distance of the incisor base and the p4 base: 20.0 mm LT: length of the occlusal surface of the p4 -ml -m2 molars: 17.5 mm TD: transversal diameter of the incisor: 5.7 mm The anterior surface of the incisor is flattened. The occlusal surface of the p4 is 8-shaped. It is in the early Stadium of the wearing process. The flexids and the dépressions of the surface is filled by clay (fig. 7.). Measurements: L: 6.35 mm, Wa: 3.85 mm, Wp: 5.1 mm. The occlusal surface of the ml and m2 molars is flat. It is divided into an anterior and a posterior part by the hypoflexid and the mesoflexid. There are two enamel islets in the anterior part: the smaller preparafosettid and the larger parafosettid (figs. 5., 7.). The former one is characteristic at the younger individuals of the S. depereti (HUGUENEY, 1999). In the posterior part of the surface there is large enamel islet: the metafosettid. measurements: L Wa Wp Hh ml 6.1 5.5 5.15 7.0 mm m2 6.25 5.55 4.85 6.0 mm 149
