debate between the generic names Neocricetodon and Kowalskia. The accurate analysis of this problem is given by Freudenthal M. et Kordos L. (1989) and Daxner-Höck et al (1995). After the latter publication, the debate seems to hâve been decided in favour of the Kowalskia. The genus is rieh in species. Up to the présent, the following Kowalskia species were described in Europe: — К. schaubi (Kretzoi, 1951) Eszterházy Cave, Csákvár (Hungary) — К. lavicati (Hugueney et Mein, 1965) Lissieu (France) — К. polonica Fahlbusch, 1969 Podlesice (Poland) — K. magna Fahlbusch, 1969 Podlesice (Poland) — K. intermedia Fejfar, 1970 Ivanovce (Slovakia) — K. fahlbuschi Bachmayer et Wilson, 1970 Kohfidisch (Austria) — K. moldavica Lungu, 1981 Вujor (Moldávia) — К. skofleki (Kordos, 1987) Tardosbánya (Hungary) — К. polgárdiensis (Kordos, 1989) Polgárdi (Hungary) — K. nestori Engesser, 1989 Baccinello (Italy) — К browni Daxner-Höck, 1992 Maramena (Greece) — K. progressa Topachevski et Skorik, 1992 Novoelizavetovka (Ukraina). Their comparative study is given by WU (1991), Daxner-Höck (1992) and Daxner-Höck et al (1995). From the viewpoint of the détermination of our matériái, we can disregard the K. schaubi, K. moldavica, K. skofleki, K. progressa species because of their evidently older age (Progonomys is présent in the faunas). Likewise, the К polonica, K. intermedia and K. magna species can also be excluded because of their evidently younger age (arvicolids are présent in the faunas). The species K. lavicati, K. nestori and K. browni can be excluded due to the significant geographical distance. The author studied the Kowalskia polgárdiensis matériái housed in the Hungárián Geological Institute. He found, that the averages of the dental measurements of this species are larger than the corresponding data of the matériái from Egyházasdengeleg. Other higher crowned (Fig. 35-37.) and their enamel is finely sculptured. Subfamily: Gerbillinae Alston, 1876 Genus: Epimeriones Daxner-Höck, 1972 Epimeriones sp. Material and measurements: no. inv.
