Mining swords in the collection of Museum of Tatabánya

This study presents results of a research regarding the mining ornamental weapons in the collection of the Museum of Tatabánya. In order to perform a precise classification of these 3 mining sabres and the ornamental sword of a mining officer, the author describes the miners’ habits of carrying weapons from the Middle Ages, and thus he provides a clear analysis of the origins and history of these mining swords.

Based on the results of this accurate historical research, these swords can be classified as follows: one of the mining sabers dates to a period between the beginning of the 1880s and the middle of the 1890s, not made for fiscal mining industry (photo 1), two of these mining sabers date to the first decades of the 20th century (photos 2-3), and there is an ornamental sword of a mining officer from the 1890s (photo 4).
