Tokai Gábor: Hol volt Peuké szigete?

Hol volt Peuké szigete? 55 Where was the island of Peuké? Tokai, Gábor This study discusses Alexander the Great’s campaign against the Triballians. According to general ancient theories, the campaign ended at the island of Peuké, which was located at the Danube Delta. Based on the island’s physical description, the diplomatic assembly of Celts from the Adria region and known ancient sources that give a view of the Triballians’ land, the author doubts that the campaign was really led to the area of the Danube Delta. The author presumes that the island was located further west, which idea is similar to previous opinions on the island’s exact location. Furthermore, according to the author, because of the above mentioned circumstances, it is possible that a geographic formation shaped like a peninsula between the lower course of the Sava River and the Danube was the island of Peuké. His theory seems to be supported by the fact that from the age of Byzantium on, this area was oftencalled„Szerémségisziget” (island ofSzerémség), a name that can be easily associated with the name of Syrmus, king of the Triballi tribe.
