Vicze Magdolna: The symbolic meaning of Urn 715

The symbolic meaning of Urn 715 Vicze Magdolna (Matrica Múzeum, Százhalombatta) Urn 715 is one of the grave furniture of burial 715 in the large Bronze Age cemetery of Dunaújváros-Duna-dűlő, where close to 1600 burials of the nearby tell-settlement, the Koszider-padlás were excavated. The settlement was partly embanked by a natural small valley the other side of which was selected as the cemetery ground of the community, which lived there for more than half a millennium. The vast majority of these burials belong to the Vatya culture. One of the most outstanding burial assemblages of this cemetery comes from grave number 715, which contains an urn, a small pedestaled bowl, another small bowl (lost by today), and a cup (PL xx). One look at this assemblage and a very interesting scenario emerges. The cup placed into this grave is one of the most characteristic finds of the Kisapostag material culture. The small pedestaled bowl, however, belongs to that of the Nagyrév culture, both fabric and type corresponds to others known from Nagyrév contexts. Analogous examples of the Kisapostag cup can be found at almost all Kisapostag sites, for eg. Kisapostag, 1 Fonyód-Bézsenypuszta, SzekszárdHidasi, Báta, 2 Dunaújváros, 3 Veszprém-Tüzér utca, 4 Balatongyörök, 5 etc. For the bowl good parallels from Nagyrév contexts come from, eg. Tószeg, 6 Kulcs, 7 Rákóczifalva-Kastélydomb, 8 Dunaföldvár-Kalvária, 9 etc. The members of these two cultural communities lived side by side contemporaneously within the territory of the Mezőföld and comprised the two basic material elements of a new social identity called the Vatya complex.
