Prohászka Péter: Tata a reformkorban

Tata in the Reform Period Péter Prohászka Principally, Hungary's modern history has been determined by the Reform Period. These years of the 19 th century influenced the political events of the period after 1867. Before 1848, the administration of Komárom county was in the hand of the liberal opposition, that is, parliamentary leaders of the reform process. The development of the county and its principal towns (Komárom and Tata) can be traced with the help of various statistical works. The books by Magda, Nagy and Fényes provide essential data on industry, agriculture, mining and population. Komárom and Tata played a role of paramount importance in the county; nevertheless, while Komárom was a royal free borough, Tata was but a market-town. Notwithstanding, Tata, owing to the Eszterházy estate and its natural conditions (such as the vicinity of the main road to Viena; abundance of water; markets), gradually achieved Komárom's status. The development was based on schools, societies and other organizations. The growing local industry (cf. more than 1000 artisans worked in Tata) produced goods (yeast, flour, textile etc.) that met market demands not only in the county but in the whole country as well. It was this industry and the artisans working for the guilds that made it possible for Tata to become a supply basis of the military force during the war of independence. 5»
