Hudi József: Pápa mint igazgatási központ a 18–19. században

The town of Pápa as an administrative centre in the 18th and thel9th centuries József Hudi After the Turkish occupation Pápa was one of the half thousand towns of Hungary and of the dozen market-towns in Veszprém county, but in the town system in many respects it had a distinctive place. It played an active role both in the establishment and the preservation of the protestant culture in the Transdanubian region and in the Catholic restoration from the 1630s that had been efficiently helped by the new landlords of the town, the Esterházys of Pápa from the second half of the 17th century. The essay covers two topics. On one hand it analyses how the administration of the town was formed step by step in the 18th and the 19th centuries and on the other hand how Pápa, belonging to the Esterházy family, had become the centre of the Pápa-Ugod-Devecser domain. To fulfill the requirements that are given by these two questions the following issues have to be covered. How had the privileged legal status of the town and its relation to the landlord been changed in the mentioned centuries; how had the settlement become the centre of the Pápa-Ugod-Devecser domain? How could the citizens of the town enforce their interests? What means and methods did the landlord use in favour of establishing the organs of his own reign and of strengthenning his influence? What kind of estate-, town- and religious policy did the different landowners pursue in the one and a half year before 1848? To answer the above asked questions we can make use of- besides the scientific literature - the defective materials from the archives in the town, the county and the domain, and the material that has been published so far in the press. Although there haven't been sufficient answers to all the questions, it might be possible to draw a picture of the historical process. 124
