Várkonyi: The Alternatives of the International Presence of our History Parallel with the European unification, it is more and more urgent task that the people of Europe get acquainted with the history of Hungary together with its international context. In other words, our country's history must be present in the next century's Europe. It is a real danger, that the Hungarian history falls out, disappears from the history of the next century's Europe. The works about the past of the future Europe published in this decade Hungary paid a little attention to, our country essentially is not there, or not correctly presented in these European histories. These new general works characterised by the fact that the history of Europe is not conceived by these as parallel national histories but with new ideas try to grasp the essential common elements in the history of the continent. This approach gives a different enriched framework of ideas even for the Hungarian history together with other nations. Europe has been always more than a simple geographical area. Its essence had been grasped differently in the past. The notion "European" appeared first in the middle ages, and the mission of the continent had been defined in peace, dialogue, and in stability. At the time of the changes of early modernity, in the XV. th, century it was said that Europe is stretch as far as the Renaissance. The idea of Europe enriched with the ability for renewal. In the recent primarily important historical works by internationally acclaimed, first class experts, our history's international presence is not satisfactory. Two questions follows from this fact: What are the reasons for this, and what are the prospects? Our history's embeddedness in the international context is a well documented fact. It is unimaginable that the authors of these new European histories intentionally paid no attention to the Hungarian works if they had had a chance to read those. It is a hardly understandable fact while previously there was, currently the Hungarian historical research has no periodical published in one of the international language of the humanities. The recent publications sometimes hardly find their ways into our libraries. Because of the money shortage, Hungarian works are not published outside the country on other languages, showing the unacceptable state of our publishing practices. 155
