early period his works remind one of Millet's realism, but later the decoration and colour schemes of impressionism characterize his paintings. A number of his paintings are exhibited in Rome and Florence. AUGUST VON PETTENKOFEN (1822-1889) His early works were influenced by the biedermeier of Vienna. At the beginning of his career he made lithographs, using this skill during the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848 and 1849 making supplements for the Austrian newspaper 'Die Bewegung'. He first came to Szolnok in 1853, returning every year between 1855 and 1881. The people and countryside around Szolnok became the exclusive subject of his works. Pettenkofen discovered the Great Hungarian Plain as a subject for himself and other artists. GÁBOR BENŐ POGÁNY (1962) This young sculptor is the newest member of the Artists' Colony of Szolnok. He studied at the Budapest School of Arts between 1982 and 1987 as a student of József Somogyi. After his formal education he returned to his native Szolnok and has worked here since then. He has held exhibitions in Szolnok and Csongrád. His works are displayed in a number of Hungarian towns. IVÁN PÓLYA (1889-1939) He was born in Szolnok. He studied sculpture at the Applied Arts School and then went to Paris to learn painting. After his homecoming he had worked in Szolnok, but later settled in Budapest. TIBOR PÓLYA (1886-1937) Born in Szolnok, he studied sculpture at the Budapest Applied Arts School and then went to Paris to study painting. After returning to Hungary he worked in Szolnok but later settled in Budapest. KÁROLY PONGRÁCZ (1872-1930) After studying at the University of Technology he travelled to Munich to study painting. He was a founder of the the Artists' Colony of Szolnok where he worked until 1909. His provocative impressionistic landscapes made him one of the most important members of the Colony, but, unfortunately, his work is often overlooked. CSABA RÉKASSY (1937-1989) He studied graphic arts at the Budapest School of Arts between 1956 and 1962, after which he studied in Italy. He was awarded several prizes at foreign exhibitions and obtained the Munkácsy Prize in 1972. Remarkably grotesque shaping and forms characterize his works. PÉTER PÁL RÉVÉSZ (?-1945) He finished studying painting under Adolf Fényes, Lipót Hermann and Gyula Rudnay. He worked at the the Artists' Colony of Szolnok from 1928 until his death. FERENC SIMON (1922) He studied sculpture at the Budapest School of Arts in 1956 as a student of Sándor Mikus, Iván Szabó and András Beck. He has worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok since 1957. He studied in France, Italy, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and the U.S.S.R. His works are displayed in a number of Hungarian towns. He has held many one-man shows and exhibited at all of the Colony's exhibitions. He has a number of art prizes to his credit. KÁROLY STERIO (1821-1862) He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and then worked in Bratislava and Budapest. He mostly drew coloured sports and hunting scenes onto gifts, as well as being a fashionable portrait painter of the time. Through his splendidly constructed pictures he became one of the most prominent Hungarian civil romanticists. 152
