At first its advantages were only enjoyed by the members of the layers of the small upper class and the middling sort, but later the example was followed the other layers of society. In the irregular processes of modernisation the most vigorous changes came between the two World Wars, but even our period new levels can be sensed in cleanliness as an ideal. These manifest themselves in new structures for houses and apartments, in the development of medical science and technology, in the production and use of equipment, and in the increasingly differentiating system of cleansing agents. The increase in manufactured products, the spread of perfumeries and chemist's shops and the appearance of new brands are all concrete proof of a modern approach to cleanliness and cosmetics. This is borne out by written sources (contemporary guides, writings, price lists, memoirs and literature, advertising material, technical literature and descriptions of objects) and the material objects to be found in museum collections. The changes in thought processes at the beginning of the 20 l century, which were closely connected with the changing economic process of the age, were to provoke for body hygiene and conscious body culture a permanently important role within the middle-class set of values.
