We are well informed about the various branches of the culture between the two world wars. About sciences, education and arts. On the basis of this information, cultural historical literature aptly remarks: the élite culture of Hungary in the interwar period was highly developed. But what about the country? What characterised the intelligentsia in the counties, in provincial towns, and what charactericsd their cultural organisational system? Could they keep pace with the élite culture? These questions were not yet properly answered by the specialised literature. As was recognized by the researchers of the cultural life of Somogy, the cultural life of Somogy, which has always been centred around Kaposvár, was based on the Berzsenyi Society, founded in 1904. Those popularising the ideas of the Society (at writer-audience meetings, at lectures organised by the Patriotic People's Front) after the 70s carefully added to their speeches that it was a mistake to dissolve rural literary societies after 1945. Even studies in the history of literature failed to represent the role of rural literary and art societies. But why? Because of their mediocrity? What kind of and how powerful spiritual force did the Berzsenyi Society own in the different periods? The present essay seeks answers to these questions and aims at providing data as to Kaposvár's and Somogy's local intellectual, cultural organizations and their quality in the interwar period.
