First World War Relics in the Szeged Museum Collection István Zombori The First World War gave birth to a new phenomenon. The soldiers who had enthusiastically enlisted to fight believed that news of their struggle in the Hungarian army should be perpetuated. They brought home keepsakes, the weapons of the enemy (rifles, bayonets, helmets, swords, uniforms and so on), and foreign coins, dress, some icons etc.. And of course they wrote diaries, and sent serious accounts and photographs. Many of these were donated to the museum during the war, as material which - even though they represent the present it is considered appropriate for the museum to preserve. Two employees of the museum, István Tömörkény and Ferenc Móra, took this to heart, and catalogued the items. As a general rule the donors were intellectuals: lawyers, doctors, teachers and important town officials. Relics of the front began to appear: money, weapons and military dress from enemy countries, occasional cards, ashtrays, lighters, vases and so on made from artillery cartridge cases, mostly with the name of the front and the date carved into them. The 1915 inventory contains just 22 items of WW 1-related weapons and military accessories. The 23 rd item was entered on 19 th November, 1915. This was a gold-plated, tin twoheaded eagle from the crest of the Russian Czar, visibly damaged by bullets in several places, as the entry describes. Height: 36 cm, width: 77 cm. Its place of origin was the main gate of Brest-Litowsk Castle. We believe item 21 of 1916 to be a unique acquisition, even at the world-wide level. For many months the soldiers of the Szeged 46 th fought a bitter standing battle in Italy. A large mulberry tree stood in front of the church of Sanmartino on the heights of Doberdo, torn apart by rifle shot. Because of this, the commanding officer, the Archduke Joseph ordered the dried-out tree to be cut down and sent home. In the summer of 1916 the famous tree of Doberdo was ceremonially donated to the city. On 2 nd April, 1919 a Russian-Soviet signal corps flag was listed in the city history inventory as Item 68; it had been captured by the 309 th Infantry Regiment on the front during August 1918. The wooden soldier donated by the city, the tree of Doberdo donated by the army and the First World War relics created a new genre among the historical material of the museum. While all the previous objects that made their way there were such that in addition to the value of their historic content, their value was enhanced by their age, these really are objects of our own time which, nevertheless, men of the time considered the witness of great times which should be preserved.
