Relics of Medical History from the First World War in the Smidt Museum of Szombathely Csilla Keppel In my paper about the rich collection of First World War artefacts in the Smidt Museum I introduced relics from medical history. This choice of topic was inspired by the fact that the founder of the museum was himself a surgeon and chief medical officer. Dr. Lajos Smidfs calling caused him to collect the relics of a medicinal past with especial care. He was in personal contact with the doctors and nurses working at Szombathely 's overflow hospital during the First World War. As a result, he was able to obtain objects that othenvise would have been scattered about. Our collection of the history of medicine includes such items of national rarity as a photograph and letter written in his own hand of the surgeon Professor Gyula Dollinger, or the photograph of Dr. Imre Gergő, inventor of the first portable x-ray machine, together with a technical description and glass negative made by the x-ray machine. On this occasion I have made a closer investigation of relics associated with two outstanding individuals, Dr. Emő Pető, the regimental surgeon, and the Red Cross nurse Gizella Kourim, m order to gain a picture of the operation of Szombathely 's overflow hospital during the First World War.
