Paraszti gazdálkodás és tárgyi kultúra - Viga Gyula: A Latorca néprajzához

216 Viga Gyula Gyula Viga ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE RIVER LATORC A This study examines the popular culture of the valley of River Latorca which flows through Ukraine and Slovakia. It demonstrates through its changes, from the 18 th century to the 20 th centrury, and explains how a river plays a role in dividing regions and connecting its ethnic groups. The study points out how the goods of the people who live on the upper, mountainous section of the river, get to the lowlands and how this traditional relation is being changed by the transformation of the landscape. This connection countinued to exist until the end of World War I. The Peace Treaty of Trianon in 1920 annexed these territories to Czechoslovakia. The author exemplify through concrete cases that the boundaries of cultures mainly coincide with the Hungarian Slovakian Ruthenian boundaries of languages. In the area the degree of traditional civilization is separated along the borders of the coexisiting religion blocks (Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic and Calvinist). This idea was modulated by the fact that elements of Hungarian civilization streamed to the South East territories of the contemporary Slovakia and to the South West part of Ukraine. So the Valley of River Latorca doesn't mean a boundary of civilization. There were intensive cultural interrelationship between the two riversides.
