TÖRÖK BÉLA - KOVÁCS ÁRPÁD - BENKE MÁRTON - SEPSI MÁTÉ: SZOLNOK-SZANDA GEPIDA TEMETŐJÉBŐL SZÁRMAZÓ HÁROM ÖVCSAT RONCSOLÁSMENTES ARCHEOMETALLURGIAI VIZSGÁLATA Béla Török- Árpád Kovács- Márton Benke- Máté Sepsi The archaeo-metallurgic analysis of three belt-buckles from a Gépid cemetary excavated at Szolnok-Szanda This paper is about the archaeo-metric analysis of three belt-buckles that were unearthed from the 5-6th century Gépid cemetery at Szolnok- Szandaszőlős and that have been displayed at the archaeological exhibition of the Damjanich János Museum for decades. The difficulty and the exclusivity of the analysis lies in the fact that we had to study objects without causing charring, objects that might have been covered and applied with various protective products over the years. The aim of the analysis was to determine the quality and composition of both the raw material and the possible history covers, and to obtain as much information as possible about the technology of their production. The analyses were carried out by the members of the Archaeo-mettalIurgic Research Team of the University of Miskolc (ARGUM) with optical stereo microscope and energy dispersive scanner electron microscope equipped with micro probe and as a novelty X-ray diffraction method was applied to establish and evaluate the remaining tension. During the analyses of the three - rather differently shaped - buckles, the composition and characteristic features of the decorative discs, the buckle rings and spikes as well as the traces of coating and ornaments and rivets were determined (silver and in case of the ring and spike of one buckle, red copper and presumed brass coating and silver-inlaid). Apart from that the process of production and the order of the making was also found out. This paper is also to demonstrate the possibilities of this relatively fast and simple way of microscopic and X-ray diffraction analysis of similar objects. 171 I
