How the Szolnok Castle came under Kuruc command (1703)

This paper is meant to focus on one of the major events of early stage of the Rákóczi war of independence (1703-1711), that is how the Castle of Szolnok fell into Kuruc hands. The relation of Szolnok and the Rákóczi war of independence has been discussed in several essays, monographs and different chapters of various book; in these studies the 1703 occupation of the castle appears as a fact, however, without having a detailed look at the circumstances.

The castle of Szolnok was taken on 21st September, 1703 by Colonel Balázs Borbély leading an approximately 2,000 strong irregular force. Based upon the available contemporary sources, and considering the notes of other works about the occupation of the castle, the author of this paper attempts to draw a comprehensive picture of the preliminaries of the blockade of the Szolnok castle month by month (from May till August, 1703), the period preceding the siege (the first two weeks of September, 1703) and the days of the blockade-siege (15th - 21st September, 1703). Having reached new conclusion in the wake of the research, the author suggests that commonly accepted starting date of the blockade (10th September) should be re-considered.

An entire chapter of the paper is devoted to the role of the Szolnok castle in the first months of the Rákóczi war of independen. It discusses the letters patent issued by Prince Rákóczi on 13th September, 1703 that called upon joining Pest-Pilis-Solt county. It follows the movements of the troops under the command of Colonel Balázs Borbély from Upper Hungary to the castle of Szolnok and the successful occupation. An important strategic and administrational consequence of the fact that the castle fell into Kuruc hands was that after the occupation of Szolnok Pes-Pilis-Solt county was divided into two parts and a Kuruc county was founded on the bigger part in May, 1704.
