SZURMAY ERNŐ: 80 ÉVES A HELYI ÖNKORMÁNYZATI FENNTARTÁSÚ KÖNYVTÁR Ernő Szurmay The local municipality library is 80 years old This paper is based upon a lecture delivered at the commemoration ceremony of the 80th anniversary of the Library Museum of Szolnok County Seat. The library section of the Szolnok Library and Museum Association opened in the basement of a town apartment block on 11th November, 1934. At that time in consisted of 5,7000 volumes. After World War II, the occupation of the town, the restoration of the damages, it was not until June, 1950 that this little collection, that counted 100,000 volumes at the time, could serve its visitors in the building of the Town Council. Half a year later the two collections were separated: the previous leader, Gyula Kaposvári chose the museum section, while the library was headed Mrs Rudolf Thoroczkay. The library was named after a Szolnok-born poet Ferenc Verseghy on 6th November, 1952. On 16th August, 1954, the library was taken over by Sándor Kisfaludi, the headmaster of the Commercial Secondary School. His name is associated with the creation of storing order, the system of catalogues, the various workgroups (lending, processing, methodology etc.). In 1969, the library moved to the ground floor of the more or less renovated building of the museum. It was in the second half of the 60’s that the librarian work process started strengthening with the creation of an inner storehouse that could deal with the demands of inter-library lending, and the establishment a children’s library section. After the consolidation of the inner working order, from the 70’s the visible improvement of the personnel and objective conditions came into the foreground along with the new tasks originating from the role of a network centre.
