TISICUM XXIV. • NÉPRAJZ Csaba Benedek The folk art objects of World War I in the collections of Jász-Nagykun Szolnok County The folk art objects of World War I are similar in nature to other objects made at different locations and at different times because in many cases the makers used military materials (e.g. cannon or rifle shells, cartridges) or other every-day materials that were at hand (wood, leather etc.). The year of making or some other years appear quite frequently (e.g. 1914, 1915,1916) and they often carry captions (souvenir, wold war relic). Apart from that it is apparent that they were made with painstaking efforts with lots of carving, and the tremendous amount of time spent on their creation. However, there are examples of lower aesthetic value (writing that are difficult to read, sketchy imagery etc.). At the same time, they differ from the objects made in other regions because they have fewer purely rustic motives. The characteristic features of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county folk art were described by László Szabó as follows: “A basic distinctive feature of the folk art of our county is that its representative pieces and most important branches were brought to life by a sense of taste that could be characterised as rural-civic.” It is apparent in the case of objects created during the First World War. It is this rural-civic sense of taste that dominates, their proportion is considerably higher, while the traditional rural pieces (drinking mugs, razor cases) appear in essentially smaller numbers in the collections.
