The history of military transport aviation in Szolnok (1984-2014)

In the rich history of the military transport aviation, 1984 marked the beginning of a new chapter: it was the year when the 89th Mixed Transport Regiment was founded. It was the first time that military transport aeroplanes and helicopters had appeared in Szolnok. The first commander of the unit was Colonel János Holler. Upon establishment, the Regiment consisted of the following executive sub-units: the air transport company (equipped with AN-24 planes), the transport helicopter company (MÍ-8T helicopters), the training company, which was responsible of the training of officers cadets (MÍ-8T helicopters), and a special company (equipped with MÍ-8T and Mi-9 helicopters). In 1990, the unit was renamed to Hungarian Defence Forces 89th “Szolnok” Mixed Air Transport Regiment. At the end of 1991, with the addition of the 1st and 2nd light helicopter companies, the organisation of the unit became brigade level. In 1991 and 1995, the special company of the Regiment was responsible for the implementation of the air transportation of Pope John Paul 2nd. In July 1996, involving the forces and equipment of the unit the “Cooperative Chance” NATO/PfP Disaster-Relief and Search and Rescue exercise was carried out. In September 1997, the brigade was downsized to regiment again.

On 30th September, 2004, the HDF 87th Bakony Combat Helicopter Regiment and the 89th Szolnok Mixed Air Transport Regiment ceased to exist. On the base of these two units, the 86th Szolnok Helciopter Regiment was established under the command of Colonel Zoltán Orosz. The regiment was equipped with Mi-8 and Mi-17 transport helicopters and MÍ-24DA//P combat helicopters. On 1st March, 2007 the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base came to existence, and on the 19th May, the airbase was named Lieutenant József Ittebei-Kiss Base.
