István Vadász The Tiszafüred Athletic Club and the Tiszafüred Levente Sports Association from the 1920’s till 1944 In the years following World War One, the conditions of sporting activities in Tiszafüred were unfavourable, so the current knowledge of the operation of the Tiszafüred Athletic Club is rather fragmented. There are data from October 1920 that the team played football matches. These might have been mainly friendly matches, and the opponents were teams mainly from Kunmadaras, Eger and Karcag. Towards the end of the decade, Polgár, Mezőköves and Heves football teams started to appear on the list of opponents. However, the Tiszafüred Athletic Club continuously worked as an association; it is proved by the amendment of the constitution of the club in 1922. In the 1920's, a different sports organisation, the Levente Association came to existence sponsored by the state. In 1933 the Tiszafüred Athletic Club and the Levente Association merged, and they appear as the Tiszafüred Levente Sports Association in the sources. From this time, the press coverage of their matches became more frequent. In the 1935-36 season, the football team entered the second division of the regional championship, however, they closed at the penultimate place out of the 8 teams competing. It did not mean that they fell out of the division, however, they did not take part in the championships any more. That fact might be in connection with difficulties of travel and the inadequate conditions of the Tiszafüred sports field. After years of negotiation and unsuccessful attempts, by May 1938, the Tiszafüred sports centre had been completed near the Holt-Tisza being the most modern sports field of the then Heves county, but even that failed to bring the desired successes. The sporting activities of the population of the town remained rather limited and lacked variety. It almost exclusively meant football, although there were attempts to establish swimming and target shooting. At the beginning of the 1940’s, the association only took part in levente championships, however, the impacts of the war and the impending battle front in the summer of 1944 soon made it impossible too. 244
