JÁNOS TOKAI: FORTIFICATIONS IN BARBARICUM IN THE PERIOD OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE
JÁNOS TOKAI FORTIFICATIONS IN BARBARICUM IN THE PERIOD OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE The purpose of this study is to suppose a more significant Roman presence in the Barbaricum, particularly in the second century AC, which can be proved by a logically set-up military fort system. Further archaeological researches will be needed to prove the above-mentioned concept. Resulted in the recently made studies in the second half of the second century AC a multi-functional military fort system could exist during the reign of Antoninus Pius or Marcus Aurelius the first three elements of which could be Hatvan, Jászberény and Szolnok. Tasks of this fort system could include control of Barbarians' movements — mainly military ones — maintaining provisions of peace treaties, supervision of transportation on the rivers in the Zagyva- and Tisza valley and river crossings. River transportation could provide easy access of the three Roman provinces, Pannónia Inferior, Moesia and Dacia by boating on the rivers mainly downstream. For study results historic, archaeological, historic hydrography and numismatic data and knowledge have been used. 75
