Polgár Zoltán—Tálas László: Zsigmond-kori ezüstpénzek Jászalsószentgyörgyön (Silver Coins from Jászalsószentgyörgy)
ZOLTÁN POLGÁR-LÁSZLÓ TÁLAS SILVER COINS FROM JASZALSOSZENTGYORGY The site of Jászalsószentgyörgy-Telek dűlő has been known for a long time. Somé finds were already recovered at the end of the 1800s. The site seems to be situated in the area where the medieval settlement of Jászalsószentgyörgy used to lie. This supposition is supported by medieval documents as well as by the archeological topography of the area. During the last ten years the villagers have collected somé coins from the area. These coins have been taken to the Damjanich Múzeum of Szolnok. Between 13rd and 24th June 1994 we carried out a rescue excavation in the area and found a treasure consisting of 25,000 silver coins. Most of the coins were issued by King Zsigmond. The coins were found in a pottery made of clay. The pottery itself was badly damaged and only parts of it could be found. During the excavation traces of the medieval settlement were alsó discovered. After examining 700 coins out of 25,000 it can be established that the earliest coin dates from 1383 and was issued by Queen Mária (1382-1387). Most of the coins were issued by king Zsigmond between 1390-1427. Among the coins there is a Turkish "akcse" which is badly damaged and its issuing date cannot be identified. 154
