Gutay Mónika - Kerékgyártó Gyula ERK 1 MESOLITHIC SITE IN THE TARNA VALLEY Preliminary excavation results Tire techno-typological characteristics of the lithics at the Erk 1 site and the multi-layer vertical distribution of the excavation finds suggest a relatively long period, which can be dated at the Early and Middle Mesolithic Period. This relative dating corresponds to the results of the geomorphological studies of the site and the radiocarbon age data of a canine tooth, found at the site (DeA7424 radiocarbon age 9171 ± 46 BP, cal 8840-8300 BC). The vertical distribution of the artefacts found during the excavation showed that most of the finds were in the alluvial meadow soil at 35-60 cm deep or in Sondage 1 at 35 cm and 85/95 cm deep. The presence of isosceles triangles, which already appeared in the Early Mesolithic Period, has a relative chronological relevance. The number of Mesolithic tools found at Erk is less than 100. The typology of the excavated tools (dominance of endscrapers, few burins, few backed lamellas, geometric microliths), as well as their distribution and the use oflithics as raw materials is very similar to that ofthe Jászberény I and Jászberény IV site artifacts, belonging to an earlier Jászberény phase of the Mesolithic Industry of the Northern Hungarian Plain. The bone finds in Erk are dominated by the bones of herd animals (Bos, Equus, Cervus elaphus L. hind). 55
