Magyar Zsolt: Késő római éremlelet Hatvanból

Zsolt Magyar LATE ROMAN COIN HOARD FROM HATVAN In 1957-58, 50-60 Late Roman bronze coins were found in Kastélykert, in the town of Hatvan. The coins were discovered by local schoolchildren, who shared the finds among each other. In 2015 one of them brought a bronze coin of Constantine II (351-361 AD) to the Hatvány Lajos Museum. There is no information about the whereabouts of the other coins. According to the donor, all the coins were found at the same place, in a lot at no. 1 (today’s) Kastélykert street. Several Late Roman coin hoards are known from the Barbaricum, which were probably buried in the late 370s AD, when the Devil’s Dyke was abandoned. The outer line of ramparts and ditches of the Devil’s Dyke, the construction of which began under Roman Emperor Valentinian I, is yet to be discovered in the territory of Hatvan. It is possible that defensive system was never fully completed. The construction of this outer line was closely linked to Gombospuszta fortlet, located in a 2 km distance from the findspot. While this fortlet may have never been completed, it is likely that the coin hoard is connected to Roman soldiers serving at the Gombospuszta fortlet or taking part in its construction, therefore the coins may have been buried before 378 AD. 167
