Edit B. Gál THE EGER ASSETS OF ESTATE MANAGER ISTVÁN ORCZY István Orczy was born in Vas County to a family of lesser nobility. He arrived in Eger in 1699 with Bishop István Telekesy. Initially he was the plenipotentiary of the Telekesy family working with the bishop and his brothers and was then continually promoted, finally becoming the manager of the bishop s estate. His first assets in Eger were acquired in the form a gift from the bishop. In 1703 Telekesy awarded him with an abandoned house, situated next to the Hatvani gate, together with the right to open an inn there. Later he also bought some vineyards and a cellar in the Szala-valley. After marrying Zsuzsanna Petrovay he moved the “family seat” to Gyöngyös, then to Tarnaörs. Following the bishops death he spent less and less time in Eger, so his local assets did not grow. After his death these were inherited by his children, Lőrinc and Anna. This study discusses István Orczy s years in Eger, his role while working for the bishop and the assets he acquired in Eger during his service. 424
