ADDITION TO THE RELICS OF THE EGER QUARTERMASTERS

I have been working in the Dobó Castle Museum for many years as a historian and museologist, entrusted with finding new editions for our historical collection.

This is not an easy task, however, because these days fewer and fewer suitable objects, documents, photographs, picture postcards or works of fine or applied arts are put on sale by their owners. Apart from these potential purchases, museologists have another source for adding items to collections, namely “searching” for such objects at auctions, on the internet or at antique fairs.

One of my most memorable finds and additions was at the antique fair in Miskolc, where a quartermasters stick was on sale, together with some other items. As soon as I held it in my hand and took a closer look, I knew that it had to be added to the historical collection of the Dobó Castle Museum.

The museums collections preserve the relics of the institution of the quartermaster, a unique position held in Eger for a long time. They include sticks, cloaks, tableaus, diaries, flags, lamps, photographs and documents.

By presenting and describing this quartermaster s stick, I feel that I am able to fulfil the mission of showcasing these treasured items to the general public. The stick has a rich history and as a museologist, I am extremely happy to see that not only was it not lost, but with a little luck, its story can continue and hopefully it will feature in exhibitions as a testament to the wonderful quartermaster traditions.
