József Regős László Pap, the quarry master László Pap, otherwise known as Uncle Laci, was bom in Miskolc on 27th January 1920, and it was there too that he completed his studies. From 1945 to 1947 he was in Soviet captivity, after which in 1948 he ended up at the stone quarry in Szilvásvárad, where he was quarry master. It was here in Szilvásvárad that the cave that was subsequently to bear his name came to light, the research of which began under his direction. His interest in archaeology had already begun in Miskolc, where he met Andor Leszih and Géza Megay at the Ottó Herman Museum, and László Vértes at the Szeleta Cave. From 1948 onwards he helped László Vértes at the INQUA excavation at the Istálloskő Cave. This marked the beginning of many decades of working together and the development of a friendship which saw László Pap frequently offering help to Vértes in the form of the taking of surface samples, carrying out fieldwork and documentation. Among other things it is thanks to this relationship that we know so much about Szilvásváradé past. The finds that were unearthed during the course of agricultural work were carefully collected by László Pap and recorded in his diary, before being offered to archaeologists for a professional opinion. This diary then formed the basis of the archaeological topography of the village. Following the death of László Vértes, Erzsébet Patek, Ágnes Salamon, Mihály Párducz, János Győző Szabó, László Fodor, Csilla Ács, Gábor Szabó, Árpád Ringer, Róbert Kertész and Péter Bíró all stmck up relationships with László Pap. We hope that Uncle Laci ended up in the right place, and that when the time comes we will be able to meet up at archaeological sites in the beyond as well.
