Tóth Zoltán: Avar kori temető Feldebrőn
Zoltán Tóth Avar cemetery in Feldebrő It was in the centre of Feldebrő, in József Lukács utca underneath house number 12 (Masina-kert) that during the course of some foundation-building in 1964 that some human remains came to light along with some other finds. Local priest Kálmán Mátyás Végh had already been collecting archaeological finds from the site as early as the late 1920s and the 1930s. In January 1972 while digging a sand pit on his own plot of land (Lukács u. 3) József Pálkovács uncovered yet another skeleton. It was soon after this that Árpád Nagy conducted a rescue dig from February 8th to March 16th 1972 in gardens lying in the vicinity, at houses 3, 5 and 8. It can be concluded that the 18 graves that were excavated at that time all belonged to the same Avar cemetery, which János Győző Szabó had already studied in 1964. It was in 2012, during the course of the laying of sewage pipes in the village, that it was necessary to undertake a preliminary excavation, under the direction of László Fodor. From 10th to 19th October 2012 the humus level was investigated on the archaeological site lying along the intended route of a ditch required for the sewage pipes. In this year a fragment of a grave came to light. So far 21 graves have been documented by the archaeologists. Based on the finds at Feldebrő one can conclude that it was during the final third of the 7th century that they started to use the cemetery which then served the settlement then existing there. The final phase of the cemetery can be put in the second half of the 8th century. Unfortunately due to the lack of documents and unsufficient material evidence (e.g. the lack of a map of the cemetery, drawings of the graves, finds etc.) it is impossible to say exactly when the cemetery began or when it ceased being used. 204
