Tóth Zoltán Henrik: Kősáncok és malomkövek a Mátraalján

Zoltán Henrik Tóth Stone ramparts and millstones at the foot of Mátra mountains The number of stone ramparts located at the foot of the Mátra Mountains, the majority of which considered to have Bronze Age origins, increased with newly found ones in 2014. In more ramparts, or rather around them, fragments of millstones lie scattered. The use of millstones in our area spreaded simultaneously with the Roman conquest. Is it possible to find millstone fragments of this kind in other ramparts? The locations in which millstone cutting was carried out are connected to the stone raw material of proper quality, and that precondition excludes certain ramparts from our scope of examination. The date of manufacture of the millstones found - i. e. between the Sarmatian and Avar Periods - questioned the ramparts being made in the Bronze Age. On the bases of analogies of scientific results available, together with contemporary sources that could be linked up with them, the age of those objects, poor in archaeological findings, could be more precisely defined: possibly they were built in the Early Middle Ages. 124
