Zoltán Varga The Phylogeography of the Carpathian Basin The palaeoenvironmental and palaeontology research of the youngest historical geology period, the quaternary has significant traditions in our country. Beside the examination of pollen profiles and excavation of bone remnants of small mammals, the research of molluscs with solid outer shell were the main directions that allowed for the fine stratigraphy analysis of the given period. A notable stage of the malacology research of the quaternary period was the summarizing work published in 1995 (Levente Ftiköh, Endre Krolopp, Pál Sümegi: Quaternary malacostratigraphy in Hungary. Malacological Newsletters (1995) Suppl. 1: 1-219.). This research constitutes not only the basis of palaeoenvironmental reconstruction for the given period, but is also the starting-point for the evolutionary genetics-phylogeography research performed with the latest state of the art instruments. On this occasion I would like to present a short summary about results of the latter, showing how our latest achievements are founded on the underlying work of our contemporaries. 91
