Kis Katalin: 150 éve született Lányi Ernő
SZECSKÓ Károly (összeállította) 1997 Lányi Ernő. In: Ezen a napon... Heves megye jeles személyiségeinek naptára. Bródy Sándor Könyvtár 65. Eger Katalin Kis Ernő Lányi was born 150 years ago Ernő Lányi was born 150 years ago, in 1861, his life and work are less well known today, though he was a determining character of his time. His role in Hungarian musical life as a composer, conductor or founder of bands and institutions, is unquestionable. Main stages of his life are well known (Miskolc, Budapest, Subotica), but no summarizing study about his years in Eger has been published so far. Lányi lived in Eger from 1892 until 1901. He was employed as a cathedral conductor by the Archdiocese, besides he tought at the Archbishop's English Ladies Roman Catholic Girls Preparatory and High School and at the Archbishop's Teachers' Training School. He took over the leadership of the Eger Choral Society. School yearbooks prove that during Lányi's years the quality of music education improved significantly, the number of music lessons increased each year. Many choral and instrumental pieces could be found in the programme of celebrations, which were taught by Lányi. Among them his own choral pieces were included, but he also played the piano, organ, and conducted. His work as a cathedral conductor is best represented by a collection of prayers and songs published under the title of Cantate. The volume was assembled with the cooperation of Dr. Kázmér Greksa, Cistercian priest, Lányi's fellow high school teacher. Under his conduction Eger Choral Society, the then young assemble quickly gained national fame. Their most important prizes were: First prize in a national competition in Budapest in 1892. In 1984, they won first prize in Fiume (Rijeka). The Millennial national competition in 1896 listed the Choral Society in the "prestigious" category. At the end of the study the effect of Lányi's achievements in Eger on the city's musical life can be seen, confirmed by documents of the Song Festival in 1907. 421
