Bishop Erdődy. Because of this, the bishop occupied the church, expelled the preacher Gábor Vitéz, and appointed a parish priest to the village. Later, with the help of Heves county, he expelled the leaders of the village and their families too, and settled down Catholics to their place. As a consequence, the village became Catholic in just a few years. At the same time as the events in Sarud, the community of Maklár with the help of the bishop started to reclaim their churchbells pawned in 1693 to the Calvinist community of Poroszló. Poroszló, a nearby town to Sarud, was not able to challenge the will of Bishop Erdődy, so they handed the bells to Maklár, and founded new ones. These events were the first steps to change the denominational proportion of the region. By the end of the century the majority of the population became Catholic. 155
