Szecskó Károly: Kovács Béla (1932-2009)

Károly Szecskó BÉLA KOVÁCS 1932-2009 On the 26th August 2009 the Hungarian Medieval archaeology, the study of history, with special regard to the history of the church as well as the society of archivists suffered a great loss. At the age of 77, after a serious illness Béla Kovács, the retired director of Heves County Archive has passed away. His more than three quarter century long life is a true image of the contradictory Hungarian social life before the changes in 1989. His work was acknowledged on a county as well as on national level. He received numerous prizes, the Prize for Heves County Culture in 1968, the Prize for Public Culture by Heves County Council in 1975, the Szabó Ervin Prize in 1993 and Széchenyi Ferenc Prize in 2002. Though he lacked scientific qualifications, he did not hold a PhD title either. In spite of it he made his mark in the field of domestic medieval archaeology, history, and in the profession of archivists. His rich life will have a long-lasting, several decade long impact. He deserves to be remembered in the minds of descendants. 438
