over the past two centuries: it was here that the town's first press went into operation in 1755, and where the town's first museum could be found from 1 874. It was here also that Hungary's first permanent public art exhibition was given a home (1812-1819). It has also been a military hospital, and numerous 18 l h century instruments can still be found in the building's astronomical observatory. The Eger Archiépiscopal Library is the only part of the building that continues to function in its original form. It contains among other things the only original letter written by Mozart in Hungary. The Lyceum once provided the inspiration for one of Eger's appellations, "Hungarian Athens". 253
