Eger Igor Zoltán Komjáti István Koháry's correspondance with the Turkish nobles of the vilaïet of Eger whilst captain-general of Fülek (Fil'akovo, Slovakia) When István Koháry was appointed captain-general of Fülek (Fil'akovo, Slovakia) in the summer of 1667 he came into direct official contact not only with the leadership of the vilaïet of Eger, but also with the pasha who was himself then in residence in Eger, with the leadership of the sancak, and indeed with the Turkish landowning nobility of the regions of the Great Hungarian Plain belonging to the vilaïet. Although the captain-general considered the Turks to be extremely disagreeable following the death of his father at their hands, he had to hold such feelings in check, for as a senior representative of the crown confronting the problems arising from Hungary's particular historical position, he was obliged to conduct minor negotiations with the enemy. On the one hand the Turks looked to István Koháry for the peaceful resolution of conflicts of interest arising from the system of joint landownership, as well as in trade and commercial matters where tax issues and property boundaries were involved. Indeed, the Turks also asked for the intercession of the administrative authorities. (For a long period Fülek functioned as the county town of Heves and Outer-Szolnok.) In other letters the Turks approached him on matters relating to the holding of prisoners. These included demands for the humane treatment of prisoners (the Turks were particularly angered by the inhumanity shown towards Muslim dervishes and priests), the establishment of fair ransoms, the exchange of prisoners, as well as the establishment of the size of ransoms and the manner in which they 122
