Veres Gábor: A közművelődés és közönségkapcsolatok ötven éve a Dobó István Vármúzeumban

1996 saw the start of the week-long Castle Camps that take place during the summer holiday, some of which were residential. The inclusion of light and sound effects (including cannon fire) in the historical exhibition, together with the improvements made in the underground passageways and gun chambers in 2002-2003, were major developments. The museum puts on a number of evening events each year where families are likely to arrive in their thousands. The children's programmes going under the title Tangible History, feature at events like the Border Castle Festival, a festival with a historical theme held during the summer. The programme is mainly concerned with learning about medieval weaponry, trying on costumes, and folk and historical children's games. The programmes put on to coincide with the major festivals (Easter, Whitsun, Midsummer's Day) allow all the schoolchildren present to take part in various handicraft activities. In recent years the Night of Museums and Eger Castle Day have drawn crowds of many thousands (7-10 thousand). From the point of view of museum education the most important investment of 2003 was the renovation of the Balassi Room. The paving, the lighting and the furnishings help to provide a rustic setting. Authentic copies of weapons such as bows, swords, pistols, and accessories (gun powder horns, cannon ball moulds, quivers) fill the room, accompanied by historical costumes (male-female, Hungarian-Turkish etc). The room is capable of putting on fourteen different kinds of educational activity, which can also be found on the Internet and in the form of distributable material. 382
