Edit Schwalm The István Dobó Castle Museum's Scientific Research Programmes (1958-2008) Scientific research takes many shapes and forms. Over the years the museum has organized and directed a number of research programmes. In addition it has also contributed to regional, national and international programmes organized by other institutions. The museologists' individual research projects are for the most part aligned in some way to these. Although research is in most cases restricted to one particular professional area (eg. archaeology, ethnography or literary history), it frequently demands complex research in which a number of branches of science are combined. The results of the scientific research programmes manifest themselves in a number of ways. 1. Collecting activities: the accumulation of artefacts, data or photographic material. 2. Conferences: the discussion of findings and the establishment of further research projects. 3. Publications: whether this be the museum yearbook, or national professional journals. Other research programmes publish the study papers that either accompany them or draw them to their conclusion. 309
