Palmer Matthew: Alexandriai Szent Katalin szobrának új datálása

Matthew Palmer THE FIGURE OF ST CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA: A SUGGESTION FOR A NEW DATING Several attempts have been made at dating the figure of St Catherine of Alexandria (István Dobó Castle Museum, Eger KK 99.1.1-2) both in the aftermath of its discovery in 1986, 1 and following its inclusion in the permanent exhibition at the István Dobó Castle Museum in 2001. 2 The suggestions thusfar made, which range from 1400 to 1430, have been based on stylistic analyses of the figure in combination with any perceived correspondence with documentation referring to the fabric of the cathedral. 3 Although attempts at dating have been made difficult, and indeed tendentious, by the condition of the composition, which lacks the heads and hands of both St Catherine and Maxentius, on whose cowering frame the female saint stands, the task has been 1 KOZÁK Károly 1989-90. 352-354. 2 H. SZILASI Ágota, (unpublished) paper given at the reopening of the Castle Museum's permanent exhibition on 17 th August 2001. PETERCSÁK Tivadar-H.SZILASI Ágota (eds) 2002. 42. PALMER Matthew 2002. 196-203.; H. SZILASI Ágota 2004. 24. 3 Kozák's study, written before the figure was restored, relies mainly on documentary evidence. Szilasi and Palmer, on the other hand, devote more time to a stylistic analysis, Szilasi using other depictions of St Catherine of Alexandria as her starting point, Palmer focusing more on contemporary fashion and costume.
