SZILÁGYI János-SZABÓ Károly 1986 A tűzrendészet története az őskortól napjainkig. Györgyi B. Pap Fire Prevention and Fire-Fighting Equipment in 18 th Century Eger The main precondition for successful fire prevention has always been the existence of the necessary fire-fighting equipment. Even in cases where the organisation was beyond reproach, fires could rage uncontrollably if the necessary technical equipment was lacking. Eger found itself underprovisioned in this department during the 18th century, comparing unfavourably with the state of preparation found in the towns of western Hungary. Despite the importance of fire prevention only limited resources were made available for the provision and improvement of fire-fighting equipment which was by no means cheap. Matters were further complicated by the fact that such equipment might be in the possession of either the town, the guilds or private individuals. The local population were of course mainly concerned with the protection of their own private property. Butts containing kapitányviz (castellan's water) could be found in front of houses, which could be used for putting out fires. The town's lack of resources meant that fire prevention equipment was in short supply. What there was in the way of provisions was restricted mainly to the protection of the town wall. The suburbs, however, could expect no fire prevention whatsoever. It was the guilds, however, that tended to be left with the task of acquiring and maintaining fire prevention equipment. It was in their capacity as town magistrates that they were given the task of preventing and extinguishing fire, and purchasing and repairing equipment. Although Eger was faced with a substantial threat from fire during the course of the 18th century, there were only limited possibilities available to both the town and its inhabitants for the acquisition of fire-fighting equipment. 638
