László Fodor Research Findings from the Early Tithe Wine Cellar at Eger Castle The tithe on wine (Hung.: bordézsmá) was already regulated during the reign of (Saint) Stephen I at the beginning of the eleventh century. The right of collection for this early form of feudal tax in kind was given to the local bishop, although a certain percentage also went to the local priesthood. It was in the close vicinity of the seigniorial collection points that the cellar, or cellar system, used for the storage of the incoming tithe wine would normally be found. These tithe cellars often amounted to a complex system of subterranean corridors. Being an important practical element in the early economic history of the diocese of Eger and the castle estates has prompted the publication of the archaeological and architectural research and the findings which followed the discovery of the original entrance to the tithe cellar at the end of the 1970s. 513
