The folk furniture either used or made in the one-time county of SzabolcsSzatmár-Bereg, which includes the bridal chest, is an important part of our folk art heritage. Thanks to the efforts of museologists and discerning collectors our county's museums, local collections and other properties which are open to the general public contain a considerable number of these folk masterpieces. In our county decorated chests are referred to as either trousseau chests, bridal chests, clothes chests, tulip chests, painted chests or market chests. The name of the object was therefore either connected with its function, decoration or with its mode of acquisition. The bridal chest was used for storing those textiles and clothes that formed part of the bride's dowry. It also served as a piece of furniture with both symbolic and aesthetic aspirations. The decoration was meant not only to add to the beauty of the object, but to make a greater overall impression. As a trousseau chest it accompanied one of life's great events, the act of marriage, and marked the beginning of a new era. 199
