While the major European towns were protected by stone walls, bastions and gateways, the Hungarian agricultural towns depended on palisades, ditches and ramparts. Villages, on the other hand, were reliant on fences cobbled together from thorn bushes, wooden stakes and wicker fences. Data survives on village fences and village gates throughout the Hungarianspeaking territories stretching from the Őrség in the west to Moldovia in the east. The very last of the Hungarian village gates survived until the middle of the 20

th century. While town walls, and the ditches of the agricultural towns were designed to defend the population and their property from surprise attacks and unwanted intruders, the primary function of village fences and gateways was to protect crops from animals straying out of the village. While there is no recollection among the present population of the village fence that once surrounded the inner areas of the adjoined settlements of 161
