reliant on methods also found on the Great Hungarian Plain (where the harvested grain is then trampled by horses) the need for traditional storage facilities was avoided, with the result that the more recent earthen barns were used only for storing fodder and keeping livestock. This more practical way of using the building was to spread to the territories immediately to the east (ill. 5.), where stable barns of a larger size can also be found (ills. 4 & 6). Stable barns were thus an innovation in the palóc region, which on becoming the design of choice then spread into other regions at the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century in response to the new social and economic conditions. 156
