In the case of cultural and material changes within the family or village, traditions are likely to change, evolve and disappear, to be lost forever. This is something which is evident in Vámosgyörk during the final third of the 19th century, when the village ceased to be the closed community it had previously been. The few traditions which survive today date from the beginning of the 20th century at the very earliest, having survived in the memories of three successive generations. 326
